      Tip:  Distance education courses may require little, if any, group projects.

      Therefore many assignments will be completed individually.

      Tip:  Time management is important when taking online courses,

      especially if you are not required to attend class at a set time every week.

      Tip:  Much of your communication will be through text chat.

      You must be able to type accurately; many students do not understand abbreviated text messages.

      You must also be able to communicate your thoughts through your posted messages.

      Tip:  Without the requirement of mandatory class attendance

      you need to be able to prioritize you time at home.  Researching for a class may not seem

      as exciting as the television show playing or the project due at work.

      but is not necessary for your first online course.

      Tip:  You need a computer to type assignments.

      Many classes will require regular weekly assignments to be submitted.

      Tip:  Instructors prefer that students have a basic understanding

      of word processing features.  Not only are these features time saving,

      but also may be course requirements.

      Tip:  Online courses may require you to use software not currently installed

      on your computer.  You will not be able to complete assignments if you do not have the software.

 

  1. I know which Internet Service Provider (ISP) I use at home.

      Tip:  An Internet Service Provider (ISP) is the company that you pay to

      provide you with internet (or DSL).  Examples are: Verizon, AOL, Netzero, Comcast.

      It is important to know your provider in case of technical difficulties.

      Tip:  Online classes are accessed through your computer and ISP.

      Lack of dependable service can create difficulties in completing assignments.

      Tip:  Distance education students spend their time online instead of in a classroom.

      Students should be prepared to invest their time at the computer.

 

  1. I know how to create a folder and save a specific document in the new folder.

      Tip:  This is an example of an assignment that a few online instructors many request.

      Creating folders is one way of organizing your assignments.

 

  1. I am willing to take responsibility for obtaining whatever help I may need with

      Tip:  Your instructor many not know you are having difficulty in a class

      unless you contact them.

 

  1. I have sent email attachments such as word documents, photos, and PowerPoint

presentations.

      Tip:  Another example of a possible class assignment.  You will need to notify

      your professor for instructions if you do not know how to complete an assignment.

Tip:  This list may be some of the requirements for an online class.

These are as important as a textbook in some classes.
